Kindergarten and First Grade Curriculum

Our kindergarten and first grade classrooms serve all children in the Marion School District, stressing academic, physical, emotional, and social development. The curriculum is designed to be developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences that build receptive and expressive language skills, as well as academic skills in reading, writing, and math. Curriculum materials include:

Scott Foresman - This program is a combination of phonics and language instruction, emphasizing selections from children’s literature in conjunction with a strong phonics program. Reading/Spelling/Language/Social Studies/Science/Writing

The Leader In Me - FranklinCovey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

Reading Horizons Discovery - Direct instruction in phonics, including the Five Phonetic Skills, Two Decoding Skills, and the 42 Sounds of the Alphabet, to develop reading skills with every student.

Second Step - A curriculum designed to reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior in young children and increase their level of social competence.

My Math - Instruction is focused on skills set forth by the State of Arkansas’ Mathmatics Standards.

Arkansas History - Instruction covers how Arkansas people, cultures, and systems are connected; the continuity and change in Arkansas, cultural perspectives, scarcity and choice, cooperation and conflict, and citizenship.

Modern Manuscript Handwriting - Our school has adopted the Modern Manuscript handwriting program.

Teachers also use teacher-created units of study to enrich the curriculum and to encourage language development.
